A senior U.S. official says the United States plans to move quickly to push for U.N. sanctions on Iran if it fails to suspend uranium enrichment by the end of this month.
Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns says the United States will press for the sanctions in early September. Earlier this week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad rejected a United Nations resolution demanding his country suspend the sensitive nuclear activity by August 31st.
Bush administration officials say they are confident the U.N. Security Council will impose at least limited sanctions, such as travel restrictions and freezing the assets of top Iranian officials. The United States and its allies believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says the program is only for peaceful purposes.
