Israel's defense minister says troops will broaden their offensive in Lebanon against Hezbollah guerrillas if diplomatic efforts to end the fighting fail to make progress.
Amir Peretz says he ordered the army to be ready for a major war. Israeli warned Lebanese civilians south of the Litani River to remain indoors overnight. It also says it shot down a suspected Hezbollah drone over Israeli territory.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes pounded southern Beirut, killing at least five people. Earlier strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon killed 24.
Israel says three of its soldiers died today in ground fighting with Hezbollah guerrillas around the southern Lebanese town of Bint Jbail.
Also, Hezbollah fired another barrage of rockets into northern Israel, wounding several civilians.
