Somalia's top Islamic leader has declared "holy war" against Ethiopia, after Ethiopian troops entered the country this week to protect the transitional government.
Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, chairman of Somalia's Islamic Courts Council, issued the call to arms Friday on a radio broadcast. Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators staged anti-Ethiopian protests in the capital, Mogadishu.
Ethiopian officials deny their troops have crossed the border. But witnesses say at least several hundred Ethiopian troops are in Baidoa, the base of Somalia's interim government. The troops are reported to be protecting the airport and the compound of interim President Abduallahi Yusuf.
The soldiers began arriving Thursday, a day after Islamic militiamen briefly moved to within 40 kilometers of Baidoa.
The militia pulled back, but the advance raised fears that the Islamists will try to topple the government.
