미국 TWA 800기 공중 폭발 참사 10주기를 맞아 미국 뉴욕 롱아일랜드의 스미스 포인트 카운티 공원에서는 17일, 희생자 230명의 유가족과 친구들이 모여 추모식을 거행했습니다.

TWA 800기는 지난 1996년 7월17일, 프랑스 파리로 가기 위해 뉴욕의 존 에프 케네디 공항을 이륙한 지 몇 분만에 공중 폭발했습니다.
당초 TWA 800기가 미사일에 의해 격추된 것으로 믿어졌지만, 당국자들은 4년간의 조사 끝에, 비행기 중앙 연료 탱크 폭발이 사고 원인일 가능성이 가장 크다고 말했습니다.

Families and friends of the 230 people who died when a jetliner bound for Paris exploded in 1996 outside New York City gathered Monday for a memorial service to mark the 10th anniversary since the disaster.
The ceremony was held at a park (the Smith Point Country Park) on Long Island. It is the closest point on land to where the plane (T.W.A. Flight 800) exploded over the Atlantic Ocean.
Hundreds of people attended the service. It concluded with the dedication of an abstract sculpture called "The Light".
The sculpture joins an existing memorial at the park that includes a wall inscribed with the names of the 230 victims.

Initially, it was thought a missile may have downed the plane. But, after a four-year investigation, authorities said the most likely cause was an explosion in the plane's center fuel tank, triggered by a spark resulting from faulty wiring.
