Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr, has called for a ceasefire in the fighting between Israel and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, and a prisoner exchange.

Mottaki made the statement after talks in Damascus with Syria's vice president (Farouk al-Sharaa). Iran and Syria are the main backers of Hezbollah.

French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin is traveling to Beirut today (Monday) to meet with his Lebanese counterpart, Fouad Siniora, and express support for the Lebanese government. France traditionally has close ties to Lebanon.

United Nations envoy Vijay Nambiar says there have been "some promising first efforts" on reaching a ceasefire in his talks in Lebanon. He says he will take to Israel some "concrete ideas" on ending the fighting.

Earlier today, British Prime Minister Tony Blair called for the deployment of international forces along the Israel-Lebanon border to stop cross-border attacks.

British Prime Minister Tony is calling for deployment of international forces along the border between Lebanon and Israel to stop cross-border attacks.

The only way to end hostilities, Mr. Blair says, is for international troops to stop Hezbollah rocket attacks on Israel, which have sparked repeated and ever more forceful attacks by Israel against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

Mr. Blair delivered his proposal today (Monday) in St. Petersburg, after meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit.

Mr. Annan (who took part in a joint news conference with Mr. Blair) says he will discuss the need for a stabilization force with other world leaders at the summit. He says the warring parties should agree to a ceasefire as soon as possible to allow a multinational force to be assembled.

Israel says it is too early to consider sending such a force to the border area.

Earlier today, President Bush hailed the statement issued by G-8 leaders on Sunday, which calls on all sides to end military attacks, but does not mention an immediate ceasefire.
