Lebanon has accused the United States of blocking a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Diplomats said that the U.S. argued in closed-door discussions late Saturday that the Security Council should make no statement about the situation in Lebanon.
The diplomats said the U.S. wanted the Group of Eight Summit, underway in St. Petersburg, Russia, to be the focus of middle east diplomacy.
Lebanon's special envoy to the U.N., Nouhad Mahmoud, said the failure to call for a cease-fire was unacceptable because people are under bombardment and people are dying.
The Lebanese government called on the Security Council Thursday to adopt a resolution imposing a cease-fire.
The Security Council is scheduled to meet again on Monday.
