Lebanon has called for an immediate cease-fire and a lifting of the air and sea blockade imposed on its territory by Israel at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
The council met at the request of Lebanon today (Friday) to discuss the escalating crisis in the Middle East.
Lebanese envoy Nouhad Mahmoud said Israel's actions were "aimed at bringing Lebanon to its knees and subverting it by any means."
Israel's ambassador to the U.N., Dan Gillerman, defended his country's offensive, saying Israel has been the target of repeated Hezbollah attacks. He said Israel's reactions were "a direct response to an act of war from Lebanon."
President Bush spoke by telephone earlier Friday with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora.
In a statement, Lebanon said the United States has promised that it will urge Israel to avoid civilian casualties and damage. White House spokesman Tony Snow, however, denied Mr. Bush promised to press Israel to halt its offensive.
