Three Harvard University scientists say they have begun a new program to clone human embryos in hopes of developing stem cells that can someday be used to help conquer a variety of diseases.
The scientists will take DNA cells from an adult patient and merge it with an unfertilized human egg, which will create an early embryo (known as a blastocyst) from which the stem cells would be isolated.
The stem cells would then be transplanted into the original donor without the genetic defect that caused the disease.
Scientists have long believed that embryonic stem cells hold the key to treating such maladies as diabetes, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries. But many religious and conservative leaders oppose it on the grounds it kills a potential human life.
