Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Russia's cooperation with the United States in an apparent effort to smooth relations that have cooled in recent months.
Mr. Putin told former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissenger today (Tuesday) the countries' efforts to find a solution to the Iranian nuclear standoff demonstrate that Russia and the U.S. can work together and reach compromises. Mr. Putin said as circumstances change, their relationship is changing for the better.
Despite Mr. Putin's positive report, U.S.-Russian relations have been strained recently.
Last month, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney accused the Russian government of straying from the path of democracy and using its oil and gas reserves as tools of intimidation and blackmail.
The comments came ahead of the Group of Eight Summit to be held in Russia next month, and sparked outrage from the Putin government.
