미국과 한국 정부 대표들이 5일 두 나라 간 자유무역협정 체결을 위한 협상을 시작했습니다. 일부 전문가들은 이번 협상이 지난 10년 래 미국이 맺은 최대 무역협정으로 이어질 것으로 전망하고 있습니다.
워싱턴에서 시작된 이번 협상은 웬디 커틀러 미 무역대표부 부대표와 김종훈 자유무역협정 협상 수석대표가 양측 대표단을 이끌고 있으며, 대표단 규모는 각각 1백명을 넘습니다.
미 무역 관리들은 자동차와 의약품 및 농산물 등 미국 생산품들에 대해 한국시장을 개방하기 위해 관세 인하와 규제 완화를 추진하고 있습니다.
한국은 세계 10대 경제대국이자 미국의 7번째 교역상대로 지난해 두 나라 간 교역규모는 720억 달러에 달했습니다.

U.S. and South Korean negotiators have begun trade talks in what some are saying could lead to the biggest U.S. trade deal in over a decade.
Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Wendy Cutler and South Korean chief trade negotiator Kim Jong-Hoon are leading the first round of talks in Washington today (Monday). Both sides each have more than 100 negotiators working on the deal.
U.S. trade officials are seeking a reduction in tariffs and regulations that could open the South Korean market to U.S. products such automobiles, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products.
South Korea currently is the tenth largest economy in the world and the U.S.'s seventh-largest trading partner with two-way trade totaling about 72 billion dollars last year.
Negotiators hope to have an agreement for Congress to approve by the end of the year.
