미국과 베트남간 군사관계는 미 해군 함정들의 베트남 방문과 의료 및 교육 분야의 교류 등을 통해 점진적으로 개선되고 있습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is in Vietnam to encourage stronger military ties with a former wartime enemy.
Before arriving in Hanoi today (Sunday) from Singapore, Rumsfeld called Vietnam an important country and said the U.S. has an evolving relationship with the Southeast Asian nation. But he said Washington has no plans to seek access to the country's military facilities.
Rumsfeld later told reporters he did not know what the next step in the relationship with Vietnam might be, and refused to say what direction he thought it would take.
Rumsfeld is to hold talks with his Vietnamese counterpart and other top officials.
U.S. military ties with Hanoi have improved gradually with visits by U.S. Navy ships and modest medical and educational exchanges.
