China and the 22-member Arab League have agreed to promote cooperation on energy issues as they seek to increase their annual trade.
A statement issued at the close of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum in Beijing says the two sides want to expand their annual trade to 100 billion dollars by 2010.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said the agreement represents just a beginning for increased cooperation between the Arab League and China. Moussa and Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing were the co-chairs of the meeting.
China's state-run media say delegates to the meeting agreed to hold their first meeting on oil issues over the next three years. The Xinhua news agency says Arab nations accounted for more than 40 percent of China's oil imports last year.
The foreign minister of the Hamas-led Palestinian government (Mahmoud Zahar) attended the forum, despite protests to China from Israel.
