미국의 콘돌리사 라이스 국무장관은 이란 당국이 핵활동을 중단한다면 미국이 유럽연합 3국과 함께 이란과의 협상에 참여할 용의를 갖고 있다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 31일, 기자들에게 미국은 이란과의 핵분쟁에서 외교적 해결을 다짐해왔다면서 이같이 말하고 미국 대표들이 라이스 장관의 성명을 스위스 정부를 통해 이란측에 전달했다고 밝혔습니다.
라이스 장관은 그러나 어떤 기자의 질문에 답하면서 이란이 우라늄 농축활동을 계속할 경우 미국은 무력사용을 포함한 모든 선택방안들을 열어놓을 것이라고 종래의 방침을 다시 밝혔습니다.
한편, 죠지 부쉬 대통령은 라이스 장관의 발언에 조금 뒤이어 미국의 이 같은 결정은 이란과의 핵분쟁 대치상황에 대한 외교적 해결을 모색하는데 있어서 미국이 앞장서려는 의도를 반영하는 것이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Washington is willing to join European countries in talks with Iran if Tehran stops controversial nuclear activities.
Rice told reporters today (Wednesday) that the United States is committed to a diplomatic solution in the dispute with Iran. But responding a reporter's question, she said the U.S. will keep all options open, including the use of force, if Iran continues to enrich uranium.
Speaking a short time later, President Bush said the U.S. decision reflects its desire to take the lead in finding a diplomatic solution to the standoff with Iran.
Rice said U.S. representatives conveyed her statement to Iran through the government of Switzerland.
