동티모르의 사나나 구스마오 대통령은 지난 일주일 동안 폭력사태가 발생한 동티모르의 질서 회복을 위한 긴급 조치를 발표했습니다.
구스마오 대통령은 30일 수도 딜리에서 열린 기자회견에서 국방장관과 내무장관을 해임하고, 국방과 국가 안보 문제에 대한 전권을 장악했다고 밝혔습니다. 구스마오 대통령의 이같은 발표는 일주일 간의 유혈 폭력 사태로 적어도 20명이 사망한데 뒤이은 것입니다.
폭력 사태 중에 수 천명의 이재민이 발생했고, 수 십 채의 가옥과 사업체가 불탔습니다.
이같은 폭력 사태는 마리 알카티리 총리가 군대 내 차별적 관행에 항의하는 수 백명의 군인들을 강제 전역시키면서 시작됐습니다.
시위대는 알카티리 총리의 사임을 요구하고 있습니다. 구스마오 대통령은 긴급 조치를 발표하기에 앞서 총리와 협의했다고 밝혔습니다.

East Timor's President Xanana Gusmao has announced emergency measures designed to restore order after a week of violence.
At a news conference in the capital, Dili, Tuesday, Mr. Gusmao said he had fired his defense and interior ministers, and had taken full control of the troubled nation's defense and national security affairs. His announcement followed a week of bloodshed that has killed at least 20 people.
Thousands more have been displaced and dozens of homes and businesses have been burned in the violence. It began after Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri fired hundreds of soldiers who had protested alleged discriminatory practices in the military.
Protesters have called for Mr. Alkatiri's resignation. President Gusmao said he consulted with the prime minister before announcing the emergency measures.
