German-born Pope Benedict walked alone today (Sunday) into the World War Two Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in southern Poland.
There, he placed a lighted candle at the camp's execution wall.
Benedict began the last of his four days in Poland urging nearly one million Poles to spread their Christian faith across Europe and the world.
At an outdoor Mass in Krakow, the Pontiff said that doing so would be the best way to honor the memory of his predecessor, Polish-born Pope John Paul.
Benedict said Poland had become a special witness to Christianity, with the election of John Paul in 1978.
