Research envoys from the United States, the European Union, Russia and four Asian nations have initialed a 12-billion-dollar deal to build the world's first experimental fusion reactor.
The seven-party consortium includes China, Japan, South Korea and India. It agreed last year to build the thermo-nuclear reactor in southern France. Authorities say member countries aim to ratify the deal by the end of the year.
Speaking today (Wednesday) in Brussels, U.S. energy envoy Raymond Orbach said the research effort is likely to be seen as an important milestone for peace and prosperity in the 21st century and beyond.
Plans call for construction to begin in 2007 in Caderache, France, with a demonstration power plant on line by 2040.
The EU is expected to pick up nearly 50 percent of the project's cost, with the six other parties contributing about 10 percent each.
