The United Nations refugee agency says there has been an influx of Burmese refugees into northern Thailand in recent months, with more expected to arrive.
A statement from the office of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees today (Tuesday) said 400 refugees from Burma crossed the border into Thailand last week, and about two thousand have arrived over the last three months.
The agency said the refugees have been arriving at government-run camps in the Mae Hong Son area of northern Thailand. It said the refugees, predominantly ethnic Karens, report their homes and villages have been burned and civilians have been killed.
U.N. officials say there are 140-thousand Burmese refugees in nine Thai border camps.
Earlier this month, human rights groups accused Burma's military of violent attacks on ethnic Karen people, including rape, murder, torture and forced labor.
