세계보건기구, WHO의 이종욱 사무총장이 뇌혈전 제거 수술을 받은 후 갑자기 사망했습니다. 한국 태생으로 향년 61세인 이 종욱 사무총장은 22일 일찍 제네바의 한 병원에서 운명했습니다.
이 총장은 WHO에서만 23년 동안 일해 왔으며 지난 2003년에 WHO 사무총장으로 공식 취임했습니다.
이 총장은 조류독감으로 인한 인간대 인간 전염의 인풀루엔자 가능성을 염두에 두고 세계 보건기구의 대비체제를 구축했습니다. 이 총장은 20일, 공식 행사 참석중 쓰러졌으며 같은 날 수술을 받았습니다.
이 종욱 사무총장의 급서 소식은 WHO가 제네바에서 22일 연례 총회를 시작한 가운데 나왔습니다.

The head of the World Health Organization has died after undergoing emergency surgery for a blood clot on his brain.
South Korean Lee Jong-wook died in a Geneva hospital early today (Monday). He was 61.
Lee had worked for the W.H.O. for 23 years, both at regional posts and in Geneva, and became director-general in 2003. He recently built up the health organization's preparations for a possible human influenza pandemic caused by bird flu.
Lee fell ill Saturday while attending an official function and underwent surgery the same day.
The news of Lee's death came as the W.H.O. started its annual assembly in Geneva today (Monday).
