The Iraqi government, in a new effort to control sectarian violence in Baghdad, says it will reorganize the capital's security forces, putting a single commander in charge of all police and paramilitary troops.
Tens of thousands of police, soldiers and paramilitary troops now operate in Baghdad, but their identities and affiliations are often unclear. All members of the reorganized security force will wear the same uniform and use similar patrol vehicles.
A senior Interior Ministry official (Colonel Ali Rashid) who discussed the plan says the Iraqi public will see changes soon. One report from Baghdad (by The New York Times) says the reorganization will result in a substantially reduced American troop presence on the capital's streets.
President Jalal Talabani says swift action is necessary to end sectarian strife that has been spreading across Iraq since February, when attackers destroyed a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in Samarra, north of the capital. Hundreds of deaths have occurred in Baghdad alone in the past few weeks.
In Baghdad today (Thursday), a roadside-bomb explosion in a western district of the city (Mansour) killed five street cleaners. Two similar explosions in another part of the city killed three U.S. soldiers.
