Indonesia's president says he is willing to mediate talks between Iran and Western countries that suspect Tehran is using its nuclear program to build atomic weapons.
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, at his palace in Jakarta today (Wednesday).
The Indonesian leader says he believes Iran's nuclear program is dedicated to peaceful purposes, and that the dicpute can be resolved through negotiations and international diplomacy.
Iran is under heavy pressure from the United States to scale back its nuclear activities, and could face sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.
In Moscow today, President Vladimir Putin said Russia is "unambiguously" opposed to nuclear-weapons proliferation anywhere in the world. But in an apparent reference to the dispute between the United States and Iran, he said "methods of force rarely give the desired result."
