The U.S. Air Force general chosen by President Bush to head the CIA is expected to face close scrutiny by members of the U.S. Senate, who must confirm the nomination before it can take effect.
General Michael is expected to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee later this month, before the current director of the Central Intelligence Agency (former Congressman Porter Goss) leaves his post (on May 26th).
The VOA Senate correspondent says several committee members have expressed concerns about the nomination -- indicating Hayden will face tough questioning. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have questioned whether a career military officer should direct an intelligence agency that customarily is led by civilians.
Mr. Bush (who announced his choice at the White House on Monday) said Hayden is the right man to lead the CIA at a critical moment in the nation's history.
