The United States says Iran's offer to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to inspect the country's nuclear facilities is a stalling tactic intended to avoid U.N. sanctions that would further isolate Tehran.
Iran offered Saturday to allow short-notice inspections if the threat of U.N. sanctions is lifted. The offer came one day after an I.A.E.A. report concluded that the Islamic Republic had failed to meet a U.N. Security Council deadline for suspending uranium enrichment.
On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Tehran of "playing games" with the international community over Iran's nuclear program.
She said if Iran is not "playing games," then it should stop the enrichment as ordered by the Security Council. She also urged Iran to "come clean" and answer international concerns about its nuclear program.
