네팔 경찰은 삼엄한 경비가 펼쳐지고 있는 왕궁 주변을 행진하던 시위대를 향해 총격을 가하고 최루가스를 발사했습니다.
이에 앞서 네팔의 7개 야당연대는 민주주의를 회복하겠다는 가넨드라 국왕의 계획을 거부한 채 시위를 계속하기로 했습니다.
가넨드라 국왕은 앞서 21일 연설에서 야당연대에 대해 총리를 지명할 것을 요청하면서, 가능한 한 곧 다당제 민주주의를 회복하겠다고 약속했습니다. 그러나 야당 지도자들은 국왕의 제안은 충분하지 않다고 밝혔습니다. 야당은 의회가 선출되고 왕정을 폐지하거나 왕을 명목상의 국가원수로 하는 새로운 헌법이 마련돼야 한다고 주장하고 있습니다.
(영문)At least 100 people in Nepal's capital have been wounded today (Saturday) as tens of thousands of protesters defied a curfew and shoot-on-sight orders to march against King Gyanendra's plan to return power to the people.
Doctors say most of the injured were hurt by tear gas or in stampedes as they fled, but some had bullet wounds.
Police in Kathmandu opened fire and used tear gas on the huge crowds of protesters marching in the vicinity of the heavily guarded royal palace.
Earlier today, Nepal's seven-party opposition alliance met and rejected King Gyanendra's plan to restore democracy.
In a national address Friday, the king asked the opposition alliance to name a prime minister, and pledged to bring back multi-party democracy as soon as possible. But opposition leaders said the king's proposal was not enough.
The parties say they want a constituent assembly to be elected and a new constitution that would either eliminate the monarchy or make the king a ceremonial figurehead.
