Rebel forces in Chad fought their way into N'Djamena today (Thursday), but the president says his troops are in full control of the central African nation's capital.
The sound of artillery and machine gun fire filled N'Djamena for several hours as government forces battled rebels trying to overthrow President Idriss Deby.
Mr. Deby later said on state radio that government troops defeated the rebels and are in control of all parts of N'Djamena. He promised that elections will go ahead on May third as scheduled.
Mr. Deby repeated accusations that neighboring Sudan is backing the rebels and he said his government will display evidence to show this.
Fighters from the United Front for Change have advanced rapidly this week toward N'Djamena. The capital is in southwest Chad near the border with Cameroon.
The rebels said today they have also launched fresh attacks in the eastern town of Adre, near the border with Sudan.
