China's state news agency says the country's top media body has banned television broadcasters from using unapproved international news footage.
Xinhua reports today (Thursday) the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has ordered Chinese television stations to use only international news reports provided by the state-run China Central Television and China Radio International.
The administration says some foreign news agencies and media with "clear political intentions" have used a variety of methods to sell international news material to local TV stations.
The notice bans television stations from combining news reports from Xinhua with video shot by foreign companies.
The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders ranks China 159th out of 167 countries in its global press freedom index. The group has expressed concern over the Chinese government's monitoring and censorship of the media.
