The U.S., Europe, Russia and the U.N. have called on the militant Islamic group Hamas to recognize Israel or risk losing aid that the Palestinian government relies on.
Meeting in Brussels, officials of the so-called Middle East Quartet repeated that there would be an "effect" on direct assistance to the Palestinian Authority if Hamas does not renounce violence and recognize Israel.
The Quartet's statement comes one day after a Hamas-led cabinet took office in the Palestinian territories.
Today (Thursday), the exiled Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, vowed that Palestinians would continue fighting the Israeli occupation.
