Japan's out-going ambassador to China says he sees reason to be concerned about how the Japanese and Chinese people view each other.
Ambassador Koreshige Anami acknowledged to reporters today (Friday) that relations between China and Japan have worsened in recent years.
One high-profile dispute between the nations involves China's protests over Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to a controversial Tokyo shrine to Japanese war dead, including some convicted war criminals.
But Ambassador Anami says that while wartime history is important, he is more concerned about the worsening sentiments of the Japanese and Chinese toward each other..
The Kyodo news service reports recent polls show growing disapproval of China among Japanese people. Anami is scheduled to leave his post next week after five years on the job.
