The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany are meeting today (Monday) to discuss new ways to break a deadlock on Iran's controversial nuclear program.
Senior diplomats from the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany are expected to focus on long-range issues, including the possibility of U.N. sanctions if Iran continues to defy the international community by enriching uranium.
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, says the meetings in New York are also aimed at overcoming Chinese and Russian concerns over how to pressure Iran to comply with International Atomic Energy Agency directives.
The New York talks come as the 15-member Security Council attempts to reach a consensus on a document calling on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment and quickly clear up other concerns about its nuclear program.
President Bush, speaking in Ohio, said today he still hopes to resolve the dispute with Iran through diplomacy.
