China's parliament, the National People's Congress, closed its annual 10-day session today (Tuesday) with Premier Wen Jiabao unveiling a reform plan to ease unrest in the countryside. Mr. Wen says his government will take measures to stop developers from seizing control of large tracts of rural land.
Such actions have triggered uprisings in many areas where villagers' protests have gone unanswered. The VOA correspondent in Beijing says Mr. Wen did not, however, promise farmers they would regain ownership of their land, which the communist state took over in the 1950s.
Premier Wen says China will not make another one-off change to its exchange rate, despite international pressure to let the yuan strengthen. Mr. Wen spoke today (Tuesday) at the end of the annual session of China's parliament. He says last year's currency reforms have provided enough flexibility for the yuan to move on its own.
China raised the yuan's value by two-point-one percent against the dollar in July, and it has strengthened only slightly since then. Mr. Wen told parliament that China must retain control of state-owned banks even as the troubled sector undergoes reform.
