Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi says there will be no change to a plan to shift U.S. forces in the country, despite one city's overwhelming rejection of increasing its share of U.S. troops and equipment.
Mr. Koizumi told reporters today (Monday) that residents of any city would vote against such a move, which he says is what makes national security issues difficult.
On Sunday, Iwakuni voters rejected the government plan. Nearly 90 percent of the vote was against adding 57 jets and about 16 hundred personnel to the U.S. base in the city. Opponents say the relocation will increase noise and crime.
The poll was a local, non-binding referendum that the central government can choose to ignore. Iwakuni is already home to 57 U.S. military aircraft and more than three thousand Marines.
