중국의 한 보건 관리는 남부 광둥성에서 지난 2일 숨진 32세의 남자가 H5N1 조류독감 바이러스에 감염돼 사망한 것으로 확인했습니다. 홍콩과 인접해 있는 광둥성에서 조류독감으로 인한 사망자가 발생한 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
광저우 시의 종 난샨 호흡기 질환연구소장은 홍콩 언론 매체에게 이 남자가 지난 2월 22일부터 고열과 폐염증세를 보여왔다고 말했습니다. 종 소장은 사망자와 가까이 접촉했던 십여명의 사람들은 조류독감 감염 증세를 보이지 않았다고 덧붙였습니다.
홍콩은 조류 독감 바이러스에 인체에 감염돼 6명이 사망했던 1997년 처음으로 조류독감 감염 사례가 보고된 곳으로 조류 독감 확산을 방지하기 위해 당시 시내 모든 가금류가 도살됐습니다.
한편 유럽에서 폴란드 관계관들은 북부 토룬시에서 죽은 채 발견된 백조 두마리에서 첫 조류독감 바이러스가 발견됐음을 확인했습니다.

A Chinese health official has confirmed that a 32-year-old man who died Thursday in southern Guangdong province was infected with the H5N1 strain of bird flu.
It is the first human death from bird flu in Guangdong, which borders Hong Kong. Zhong Nanshan, director of the Guangzhou Institute for Respiratory Diseases, told Hong Kong news outlets that the man showed symptoms of fever and pneumonia on February 22nd.
Zhong said that a dozen people who had come in close contact with the victim showed no symptoms.
Hong Kong was the scene of the first reported bird flu outbreak in 1997, when the virus jumped to humans and six people died. All poultry in the city were slaughtered to contain the outbreak.
In Europe, Polish officials confirmed the country's first two cases of the H5 bird flu after two swans were found dead in the northern city of Torun.
