China is warning that Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's decision to scrap a governmental committee responsible for unifying with China could endanger peace in the region.
An editorial carried by the state-run China Daily today (Tuesday) called Mr. Chen's actions "secessionist" and said they could trigger a serious crisis in cross-strait relations. It referred to Mr. Chen's moves as provocative, and repeated China's assertion that it will fight against secessionist activities. On Monday, Mr. Chen announced his decision to stop funding the National Unification Council and to scrap a set of guidelines for reunification with China.
The United States downplayed the decision, saying the council had been frozen, not abolished. It also said that Mr. Chen reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the status quo with China. Beijing considers Taiwan a renegade province, and has threatened to use force if the island formally declares independence.
