India's ambassador to the United States has dismissed fears that a controversial civilian nuclear energy agreement with the U.S. would help his country build more nuclear weapons.
Ronen Sen said Indian scientists have never needed outside help in developing the technology or fuel to create nuclear bombs. He said his country's nuclear weapons program will proceed even if the deal is not approved.
Officials from both countries are trying to finalize the agreement ahead of President Bush's visit to India next month. Critics of the deal in the U.S. contend that giving India access to American technology will allow the country to further its nuclear weapons research and increase the amount of fuel available to make bombs.
