필리핀 레이테섬에서 마을 전체가 진흙더미에 묻히는 대형 산사태가 발생한 지 하루뒤인 18일에도 구조작업이 계속되고 있습니다.
당국은 마을 주민 1800여명 가운데 생존자는 수십명에 불과하다고 말하고 있습니다. 인근 다른 마을 주민들은 만일의 사태에 대비해 대피해 있습니다.

필리핀 재해 대책 당국은 수색견, 광부들을 비롯한 추가 긴급 구조, 지원반이 현지로 향했으며, 의약품과 식량, 시체 운반용 부대, 천막, 발전기등도 급파됐다고 말했습니다. 귀운 사우곤 마을은 17일 오전, 인근 산이 무너지면서 진흙더미에 묻혔습니다.
구조 대원들은 부드럽고 불안정한 토양으로 인한 피해가 다시 발생할 것을 우려하며 무릎까지 오는 진흙 속에서 조심스레 수색작업을 벌이고 있습니다.
관리들은 피해지역 마을주민 11명이 또다른 산사태에 대한 우려때문에 대피했다고 말했습니다. 주민들은 대피 장소로 이동되고 있습니다.
한편 글로리야 아로요 필리핀 대통령은 마닐라에서 재해 대책 당국 관리들과의 회담을 주재하고, 대형 참사에 직면해 전국민에게 용기를 가질 것을 당부했습니다.
아로요 대통령은 필리핀 인들에게 시련기인 이때 모두가 일치 단결하고 단합해 사랑하는 사람들을 잃은 이들을 도와주자고 역설했습니다. 미국 해군 역시 구조 작업에 나서고 있습니다.
두척의 미 군함이 피해지역으로 향하고 있고, 필리핀 주재 미국 대사관의 한 관리는 19일 동틀 무렵까지는 헬리콥터 17대와 천여명의 해병대원들을 출발시키게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
해상 훈련을 위해 이미 필리핀에 와있던 선박들역시 정수장비, 발전기, 그밖의 구호품을 실었습니다. 필리핀 해군 선박들에게도 해상 병원 및 사령본부로 쓰이기 위해 현지파견 명령이 내려졌습니다.

INTRO: Rescue operations continue on Leyte island in the Philippines, a day after a landslide buried a village under a sea of mud. Authorities say only several dozen (57) survivors have been accounted for in a village of 18-hundred people. Other villages in the area have been evacuated as a precaution. Douglas Bakshian has this VOA report from Manila.
TEXT: Fresh rescue and assessment teams were flown to the region Saturday, including search dogs and miners. Philippine disaster officials say medicine, body bags, tents, food and generators were also dispatched.
The village of Guinsaugon was buried in a sea of mud Friday morning, when the side of a nearby mountain collapsed. Rescue workers are treading carefully in knee-deep mud, fearing that the soft, unstable soil could shift again.
In another development, officials say 11 more villages in the area have been evacuated because of concerns over more landslides. The residents are being moved to evacuation centers.
In Manila, President Gloria Arroyo presided over a meeting of national disaster officials, and called on the country to show courage in the face of tragedy.

The U.S. Navy is also pitching in. Two American warships are heading to the stricken region, and a U.S. Embassy official says they will be able to launch 17 helicopters and one-thousand Marines by daybreak Sunday.
The vessels, which were already in the Philippines for military exercises, also carry equipment to purify water, generators and other supplies. Philippine naval vessels have been ordered to the region, as well, to be used as floating hospitals and command centers.
Leyte has been the scene of tragedy before. In 1991, more than five-thousand people died in floods caused by a typhoon.
Heavy rains have lashed the region for days, which may have contributed to the landslide. (SIGNED)
