The World Health Organization says a cholera outbreak in southern Sudan has claimed at least 27 lives in the past two weeks. The U.N. agency says more than one thousand-400 people have fallen ill with suspected cholera in the outbreak zone. Cholera was first reported in the town of Yei earlier this month.

The W.H.O. says the disease has spread to Juba, the capital of southern Sudan, which is home to 250 thousand people. Health officials say cholera poses a major threat to Juba because many of its people use unclean water from the Nile River. Cholera is generally spread by using dirty water for drinking and cooking. It can lead to diarrhea and dehydration.

The W.H.O. says only one-third of southern Sudan's 10 million people have access to clean water.
