미국의 도날드 럼스펠트 국방장관은, 아프가니스탄 주둔 나토군 증강계획이, 반드시 아프간 주둔 미군병력의 감축을 의미하는 것은 아니라고 말했습니다. 럼스펠트 장관은 9일, 이탈리아에서 열리는 나토 국방장관 회담 참석을 위해 미 공군기를 타고 가는 중에 이같이 말했습니다.
아프가니스탄 주재 나토군은 수도 카불에서 불안정한 남부지역으로 임무확대를 위해 준비중입니다. 나토는 또한, 가장 폭력사태가 극심한 아프가니스탄 동부에도 병력을 배치할 계획입니다.
그러나 럼스펠트 장관은, 나토의 임무는 보안과 안정, 아프간 재건에 촛점이 두는 반면, 미군주도의 연합군은 계속해서 탈레반 반군을 추적할 것이라고 말했습니다. 나토는 아프간 주둔 병력을 현재의 만명에서 만8천명으로 증강할 계획입니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says the planned expansion of NATO's military force in Afghanistan will not necessarily mean a reduction in U.S. troop strength in the country. Rumsfeld made the comment today (Thursday) onboard a U.S. Air Force plane enroute to a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Italy.
The NATO force in Afghanistan is preparing to expand from the Afghan capital, Kabul, to the volatile south. NATO plans to follow the move by deploying in eastern Afghanistan, where the insurgency is the strongest. But Rumsfeld says the NATO mission will focus on security, stability and nation-building work, while U.S.-led coalition forces will continue to hunt for Taleban rebels. NATO plans to boost the number of troops in Afghanistan from 10 thousand to about 18 thousand.
The United States commands a separate force of about 18 thousand troops.
