General Motors said today (Tuesday) it is cutting its dividend in half and slashing the salaries of top managers.
GM is the world's biggest automaker, but it lost more than 8.5 billion dollars last year.
GM CEO Rick Wagoner will see his pay cut in half, while other top executives face steep cuts.
Stockholders will see dividends cut to one dollar per share, saving the company more than half a billion dollars.
The cuts follow pressure from shareholders -- led by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian -- to reduce costs.
Meantime, the second-largest automaker, Toyota, announced that its profit for the last three months of 2005 rose 34 percent to a record high.
