덴마크 등 일부 유럽국가 신문들이 이슬람의 예언자 마호메드 풍자만화를 게재한 것에 대한 회교도들의 분노에 찬 항의시위가 전세계로 확산되고 있습니다.
6일, 아프가니스탄에서 마호메드 풍자만화에 항의하는 시위를 벌이던 회교도들과 경찰간에 충돌이 벌어진 가운데 경찰의 발포로 세 사람이 숨졌으며 인도와 인도령 캐슈미르에서도 회교도들의 항의시위가 벌어졌습니다.
아프리카 소말리아에서는 회교도들의 항의시위도중에 10대 한 명이 숨졌으며 말리와 나이지리아에서도 항의시위가 벌어졌습니다. 이란의 수도, 테헤란에서는 회교도 시위자들이 오스트리아와 덴마크 대사관에 화염병을 던지며 폭력시위를 벌였습니다.
이틀 전에는 레바논과 시리아에서 회교도 시위자들이 덴마크 외교공관 건물에 불을 질렀습니다.
미국 백악관은 회교도들의 폭력시위를 규탄하고 해당정부는 긴장사태를 완화하는 조치를 취하라고 촉구하고 있습니다.
회교 예언자 마호메드가 두건에 폭탄을 꽂고 있는 모습의 풍자만화는 당초 지난 해 9월 덴마크 신문에 처음 실렸다가 최근 유럽 다른 나라들의 신문에 다시 게재됐습니다.
한편, 러시아의 자치공화국 체츠냐 정부는 모하메트 풍자만화가 처음 신문에 게재된 덴마크 단체들의 국내 활동을 금지했습니다.
체츠냐의 람잔 카디료프 총리대행은 6일, 체츠냐 정부는 덴마크 비정부 기구들의 입국을 허용하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 체츠냐에서는 러시아군이 회교도 분리주의들과 여러 해 동안 전투를 벌이고 있습니다.
덴마크난민위원회는 다른 비정부 기구들과 함께 체츠냐에서 난민들에게 식량을 나누어주는 등 인도적 구호활동을 펼쳐왔습니다.

Protests against the publication of cartoons in Europe depicting the Prophet Mohammed are continuing across the Muslim world despite appeals for calm.
Three people were killed in Afghanistan when police opened fire to disperse demonstrators. Protests were also held in India and Indian Kashmir today (Monday).
In Somalia, a teenager was killed when demonstrators attacked police. Relatively peaceful protests were held in Mali and Nigeria.
In Tehran, Iranian protesters threw fire bombs at the Austrian and Danish embassies. Protesters burned Danish diplomatic posts in Syria and Lebanon over the previous two days.
Protests were held in several other countries, including Indonesia.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged Muslims to accept the apology from the Danish newspaper that first printed the caricatures. French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy also appealed for calm.
The White House condemned the violent protests and urged governments to take steps to lower tensions.
The cartoons, including one showing Mohammed wearing a bomb as a turban, appeared in a Danish newspaper in September before being reprinted in various European cities.
Meanwhile, the government of Chechnya says it is banning Danish organizations because of the political cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed, which were first published in a Danish newspaper.
Acting Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov said Monday the Kremlin-backed government will no longer allow any Danish organizations into the war-torn province, where Russian troops have been battling Muslim separatists for years.
The Danish Refugee Council, among other organizations, has been prominent in distributing food to refugees there.
