U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has urged Muslims to accept an apology issued by a Danish newspaper that published caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad.
The paper, Jyllands-Posten, has said it was sorry for causing offense, but defended its decision to publish the cartoons. The drawings have sparked protests from Muslims in many countries.
Speaking to reporters Friday, Mr. Annan called on Muslims to move past the controversy and accept the apology "in the name of Allah the merciful."
The cartoons were first published in the Danish newspaper in September. One shows the Prophet Mohammed wearing a turban shaped like a bomb. Many European papers reprinted them this past week to show solidarity for press freedom.
