Demonstrators angered at cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed have stormed the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Syria's capital, Damascus, setting the buildings on fire. The caricatures were first published in September in a Danish newspaper (Jylland Post) and later elsewhere.
They have sparked major protests throughout the Muslim world. Hundreds of protesters today (Saturday) threw stones, chanted slogans and burned European flags outside European buildings in several locations across Gaza, including the European Union offices. Protests also took place in London and Copenhagen. Right-wing protesters also demonstrated in Denmark against the Muslims.
In Tehran, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ordered the Commerce Ministry to look into canceling all contracts with countries whose newspapers have published the caricatures. Meanwhile, Jordanian authorities have detained Jihad Momani, the editor of a tabloid newspaper (Sihane) that published one of the controversial cartoons.
