Coretta Scott King, the widow of U.S. civil rights icon Martin Luther King Junior, has died at the age of 78. Mrs. King had been in poor health in recent months. Friends and associates told U.S. television networks Tuesday morning that she had died in her sleep.
She was born in (the southern U.S. state of) Alabama in 1927, and received her bachelor's degree in music from Antioch College in Ohio. She married Martin Luther King, Junior, in 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts, while he was a graduate theology student at Boston University and she was studying concert singing at the New England Conservatory of Music.
They moved to Montgomery, Alabama, shortly after their marriage, where Dr. King was thrust into the leadership of the U.S. civil rights movement. She and her first child narrowly escaped injury when their home was bombed during the Montgomery bus boycott. She carried on her husband's work after his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. Mrs. King is survived by the couple's four adult children.
