Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian says he may scrap national guidelines that promote eventual reunification with mainland China.
On a Lunar New Year visit to the southern county of Tainan today (Sunday), Mr. Chen said some people have urged him to abolish Taiwan's National Unification Council.
Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui set up the council after taking office in 1988 to draft a plan for reunification with China, once Beijing ends communism and pursues democracy.
Mr. Chen says the guidelines are outdated, and he will seriously consider removing them. But scrapping the council could be seen by China as a step towards Taiwan independence.
Taiwan opposition leader Ma Ying-jeou criticized Mr. Chen's remarks, saying he should stick to his election promises to uphold the guidelines.
