A senior Hamas leader says he has asked Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to meet within two days to discuss the formation of the next government, after the Islamic militant group's sweeping election victory.
Ismail Haniyeh, who headed Hamas's list of parliamentary candidates, said he spoke to Mr. Abbas by telephone today (Friday). Hamas captured 76 of the 132 seats in Wednesday's parliamentary elections.
Israeli acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Thursday Israel will not negotiate with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas, which has called for the destruction of the Jewish state.
In Asia, several governments urged Hamas to renounce violence, while hardline Muslim groups hailed the result as a reward for decades of armed resistance against Israel. Separately, witnesses say at least three people were wounded today when Hamas and Fatah gunmen exchanged fire in the town of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
