Palestinian election officials are counting ballots after Wednesday's parliamentary election that could bring the militant Islamic group Hamas into the government.
Exit polls suggest the governing Fatah party won more than 40 percent and Hamas more than 30 percent. Election officials say 77 percent of the more than one million eligible voters cast ballots for the 132-seat Palestinian Legislative Council.
Palestinians voted under tight security in the Gaza Strip, and occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem for twelve hours in their first parliamentary elections in a decade.
Israel has not publicly said what it will do if Hamas gains a strong presence in a new Palestinian government.
The White House called the election a big day for the Palestinians, adding the U.S. still considers Hamas a terrorist organization.
