Iran has condemned remarks by French President Jacques Chirac in which he raised the threat of a nuclear response to state-sponsored terrorist attacks on French soil.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi was quoted today (Sunday) saying Mr. Chirac's comments are unacceptable. Asefi said the impact of nuclear attacks in World War Two was so catastrophic that such weapons should never be used again.
Mr. Chirac said Thursday any state leaders who use terrorist means against France would risk a non-conventional military response. He made the comment in a speech defending the need for the French nuclear deterrent.
Mr. Chirac did not mention any country by name, but France is among several Western countries that suspect Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb - a charge Tehran denies.
