Nepal's royal government has detained at least 50 political activists and cut off cellphone (mobile telephone) services ahead of Friday's planned anti-government rally in Kathmandu.

Communications officials say cellphone services were cut this (Thursday) morning, but land telephone lines and Internet services were working.

Organizers say thousands of people are expected to attend Friday's demonstration, despite a government ban.

An alliance of seven political parties called for the rally to pressure King Gyanendra to restore multi-party democracy.

Nepal's Maoists rebels, who recently forged a loose alliance with political parties, are also urging people to support the anti-government rally.

The king seized absolute power last year and fired the elected parliament, saying it had failed to tackle the decade-old Maoist revolt.
