중국 베이징에서 열린 국제 공여국 회의 참가국들은 조류독감 대처를 위한 19억달러의 지원을 약속했습니다. 이같은 액수는 세계 보건 전문가들의 예상을 초과한 것입니다. 이번 회의에서는 조류독감 바이러스를 차단하고 세계적인 전염병을 예방하기 위해 최소한 15억달러를 모금할 계획이었습니다.
미국 대표단은 미국은 교부금과 기술지원 형태로 3억3천4백만달러를 기부할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 중국은 가난한 나라들의 조류독감 차단을 돕기 위해 1천만달러를 약속하는 한편 원자바오 총리는 부자 나라들은 기금조성에 더 큰 역할을 해야 한다고 말했습니다.
이밖에 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장은 회의에 보낸 메시지에서 조류독감 예방을 위한 지금의 투자는 장기적으로 생명을 구하고 돈을 절약하는 일이 될 것이라고 말했습니다.

International donors meeting in Beijing have pledged one-point-nine billion dollars to the fight against bird flu, exceeding a target set by world health experts.
The two-day conference, which wrapped up today (Wednesday), was aimed at raising at least one-and-a-half billion dollars for containing the virus and preventing a pandemic.
U.S. delegates said Washington will contribute 334 million dollars to a bird flu fund, in the form of grants and technical assistance.
China promised 10 million dollars to help poor countries contain bird flu. But Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said the world's richer nations should play a larger role in fund-raising.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan addressed the conference through a recorded message. He told delegates that by investing in bird flu prevention now, they will save lives and money in the long term.
