지난 2000년의 노벨 평화상 수상자인 김대중 전 대통령은 16일, ‘버마의 상황은 반드시 개선되야 한다’라는 제목으로 성명을 발표하고, 버마정부는 지난해말 가택연금 기간이 연장된 아웅산 수지 여사를 포함해, 반 체제 인사들의 자유로운 정치활동을 보장해야한다고 촉구했습니다.
한국언론은, 김 전 대통령의 성명이 버마의 탄 쉬웨 장군과 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장에게 전달됐다고 보도했습니다.

Former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung says the situation in Burma is worsening, and he is calling for the country to be democratized.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner (in 2000) gave his opinion today (Monday) in a published statement titled, "The Dire Situation in Burma Must Be Improved."
He urged Burma's government to guarantee the free political activities of political dissidents -- including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose house arrest was lengthened late last year.
Mr. Kim also called on Burma's military leaders to allow the free entry and activities of U.N. representatives and other international organizations. He called on the leadership to take appropriate measures so that humanitarian assistance from abroad could safely reach the people in need.
Korean media report the former president's statement has been sent to Burma's Senior General Than Shwe (chairman of the State Peace and Development Council) and U.N. leader Kofi Annan.
