President Bush says progress is being made in Iraq, but more sacrifice and tough fighting are expected this year.
In Washington today (Tuesday), Mr. Bush told an audience of American war veterans that Iraq is the central front in the global war against terrorism, and the United States will settle for "nothing less than complete victory" there.
He said efforts in Iraq this year are to focus on democracy, security and reconstruction.
He said American troop levels will be reduced as Iraqi forces increasingly take control of security, but their withdrawal will not be determined by what he termed artificial timetables. He also said it is unacceptable for Iraqi police to commit abuses, and called on Iraqis to put aside their political, religious, and sectarian differences.
The president gave a series of similar speeches in December in an effort to restore public confidence in his Iraq policy, after public support dropped due to ongoing violence and instability.
