Israel's internal security minister says candidates for this month's Palestinian legislative elections will be allowed to campaign in Arab East Jerusalem as long as they are not members of militant groups.Gidon Ezra told Israeli radio today (Monday that) all those who want to campaign will have to submit a request to Jerusalem police.
The minister said those who do not represent extremist groups will be allowed to take part in political activities in East Jerusalem, but he did not guarantee that Israel will allow voting in the city's Arab sector.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to cancel the January 25 vote if Israel prevents voting in East Jerusalem. Israeli radio says Israeli and Palestinian officials are to meet later today to discuss the issue.
